Electrifying Commutes: Exploring the India Electric Rickshaw Market

The India e-rickshaw market will reach a value of USD 456.2 million in 2030, with a compound annual growth rate of 6.6% by the end of this decade. The key factors, which are helping the industry to grow are environmental policies and initiatives of the government, reducing prices of the batteries in the country, and low-cost of these vehicles, the use of these as a suitable commutation solution.

The growing requirement for e-rickshaws charging with solar power is the novel trend in the industry. A standard battery e-three-wheeler makes use of the conventional electricity for charging its batteries. But, in a solar-powered-rickshaws, the batteries are charged on the go, when the sun is out.

Moreover, these provide higher energy efficiency, while their mileage can be increased by solar panels about 10% to 15%, with a lifespan of a decade.  These features are boosting the popularity for these vehicles for the purpose of transportation, and manufacturers, for example. Lohia Auto Industries and Inter IKEA Systems B.V are introducing such novel products for getting a competitive advantage.

E-rickshaws with 1,000–1,500W motor power dominated the industry in the past. A large count of e-rickshaws has 1,000–1,500W motors as they provide benefits with regards to operational costs. Companies are emphasizing on leveraging their knowledge and experience in the production of locomotive electrical motors and electrical parts to diversify their capacity of production and enhance the supply of these motors with the passage of time.

Passenger carriers will grow at a higher rate of 7.8%, by the end of this decade. With the fast-rising urban populace powering the requirement for cost-effective first- and last-mile transport, the disposition of passenger carrier e-rickshaws is growing, for offering affordable transportation services.

In the recent past, Uttar Pradesh was the leader of the India e-rickshaw market, chiefly as a result of the increasing requirement for these vehicles from tier-1, 2 cities, and rural–urban borders. Basically, the growing customer base is powering the usage of these vehicles, therefore pushing sales of e-rickshaws in the state.
In the year 2019, e-rickshaws were introduced in 65 novel tier-2 and 3 cities as a result of the high requirement for them and requirement of the customers for last-mile connectivity.

Apart from UP, other states for example, West Bengal, Bihar, and Assam, have a considerable count of these vehicles. Additionally, Tripura, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, and other eastern states are amongst the fastest-growing states in terms of the sales of the e-rickshaws.
