The Air Force has selected a replacement: the Rolls-Royce F130 engine. The new powerplants will be more fuel-efficient by 30 percent and require less maintenance. They will also reduce the bomber's carbon footprint, a factor that matters for basing negotiations in Europe. The re-engining program, budgeted at 11.8 billion dollars, will keep the B52 flying into the 2050s. That means the last B52 will retire at nearly 100 years old.

 Modern B52 operations look different. The bomber now carries precision-guided munitions like the JDAM, a kit that turns a dumb bomb into a GPS-guided weapon accurate to within 13 meters. It also carries the AGM-158 JASSM, a stealthy cruise missile with a range of over 500 miles. The B52 can launch these weapons from outside enemy air defenses, meaning it does not have to fly over heavily defended territory. This changes the tactical equation. The B52 becomes a missile truck, a platform that can loiter for hours and strike dozens of targets in a single sortie. In 2023, a B52 from Minot Air Force Base flew a 30-hour mission over the Arctic and dropped four JASSM-ER missiles on a simulated target in Alaska. The test proved the bomber can still project power in the most challenging environments.
 The crew experience inside a B52 is unique. The cockpit has four seats side by side. The pilot and co-pilot sit in ejection seats. The rest of the crew, including the navigator, radar navigator, and electronic warfare officer, sit below on the lower deck. They do not have ejection seats. In an emergency, they must bail out through a hatch in the floor. The interior is cramped, noisy, and cold. Temperatures can drop to 40 degrees Fahrenheit on long missions. The crew wears flight suits, oxygen masks, and survival gear for hours on end. It is not comfortable, but it is functional. The B52 was designed for endurance, not luxury.
 The B52 also serves a strategic role beyond bombing. It is a visible demonstration of American power. When tensions rise with North Korea or China, the Pentagon often sends B52s to fly over the Korean Peninsula or the South China Sea. These shows of force are carefully calculated. The B52's silhouette is instantly recognizable, and its presence sends a clear message. In 2022, during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, B52s conducted bomber task force missions over Europe, landing in the United Kingdom and operating from bases in Norway. The message was that NATO has long-range strike capability ready at all times.
 The future of the B52 is tied to the B21 Raider, the next-generation stealth bomber now in testing. The B21 will handle the high-threat missions, penetrating advanced air defenses to strike deep targets. The B52 will handle the rest. It will launch stand-off weapons, conduct maritime patrols, and provide conventional strike capacity at a lower cost per flight hour. The B52 costs about 70,000 dollars per flight hour to operate, compared to 150,000 dollars for the B1 Lancer and over 120,000 dollars for the B2 Spirit. That cost advantage matters when budgets are tight.
 The B52 is not a glamorous aircraft. It is slow, loud, and old. It cannot outrun modern fighters or hide from radar. But it does not need to. It outlasts them. The B52 has survived every attempt to retire it, from the 1990s post-Cold War drawdowns to the 2010s budget cuts. It keeps flying because it keeps working. The airframe has been tested to 50,000 flight hours, and some planes are approaching that limit. The Air Force is now conducting a service life extension program that will replace the wings, the landing gear, and the avionics.
