What are Dentures?

Dentures are removable prosthetics used to replace teeth and the gum tissue around them. Dentures may be either complete or partial. Partial dentures are used when just one or a few teeth need to be replaced, whereas full dentures are used when all teeth need to be replaced.

In most cases, partial dentures may be taken out. False teeth are attached to a gum-colored foundation by metal or plastic clasps in removable partial dentures.

However, these false teeth may also be permanently affixed. It's possible to have a dental bridge instead of a removable partial denture. 

There are three types of removable partials:

•  Cast metal partial denture:

The detachable partial dentures made of cast metal are the most popular. Artificial teeth are set into a gum-colored acrylic substrate. Clasps, often made of metal, attach to the denture base and keep it in place.

This denture is stable and plaque-resistant with regular maintenance. Cast metal partials are perfect for long-term solutions.  

• Flexible partial denture:

Partial dentures that can bend and move with your mouth are called flexible dentures. These false teeth look genuine and feel comfortable in your mouth.

Those with an allergy to acrylic may fare better with a flexible partial. Valplast is a popular name in the flexible partial denture industry. 

If a crack or break develops in a flexible partial denture, it cannot be fixed. It is necessary to replace the whole denture.

Temporary tooth replacement with a flexible partial is usual. 

• Acrylic partial denture (flipper tooth):

Another solution is a flipper tooth denture made of acrylic. It has an acrylic foundation that can be removed, a plastic replacement tooth or teeth, and metal clasps.

Flipper's teeth are the most budget-friendly removable denture option but also less comfortable. They aren't constructed to last for a very long period.

There are four types of fixed partial

• Traditional bridge:

Common materials for conventional bridges include porcelain, metal, and ceramic. A bridge consists of one or more prosthetic teeth and two dental crowns, one for each side. 

• Cantilever bridge:

A cantilever bridge functions in much the same way as any other bridge. However, the fake tooth in this bridge can only be supported on one side. 

• Maryland bridge:

The bridges in Maryland may be either porcelain or gold. The bridge is held in place by the "wings" bonding to the teeth on each side. It is usual practice to utilize this bridge to replace a lost front tooth.

• Implant-supported bridge:

These bridges depend only on dental implants for stability. If you're missing three or more teeth, they're your best option.
